How PortraitScore Works

Anonymous Peer Voting by Humans with Accurate Trustworthy Results

Anonymous Peer Voting by Humans with Accurate Trustworthy Results
PortraitScore is a data-driven system that uses a combination of anonymous peer voting and artificial intelligence to rate your portrait photos in three different categories: confidence, approachability, and competence.

The anonymous peer voting process ensures that your photos are objectively evaluated by a diverse group of people, which helps to eliminate any personal biases that you or your friends and family may have. Our AI technology also ensures accurate and trustworthy results.
With PortraitScore, you’ll receive data-backed evidence of which of your photos is the best one to use with absolute confidence. We submit your Portraits to find the top ones & give them to be voted by a minimum of 40 diverse people from all over the world. The results are then scaled to give the most accurate data evidence possible. Then when you use it on your Profile, you know you’ll get the best!

WHAT IS A HEADSHOT?

A headshot is a portrait specifically tailored for business. It is defined as a portrait cropped into chest height and above only. Often used for CV’s, LinkedIn, Sign posts, websites and Business advertising. A headshot should demonstrate who you are and why people should choose you over anyone else. As human beings, we’re prone to making instant, gut decisions on everything from whether someone is credible, capable and trustworthy. A headshot helps you to bridge this gap and control, to a great extent, the way in which others initially perceive you in less than a second.

WHAT IS A PORTRAIT?

A portrait is a photograph capturing the likeness, personality, and mood of an individual or a group of people. It focuses on showcasing the subject's facial features, expressions, and sometimes their surroundings or environment. Portraits are usually a midshot from the waist up. Portraits can range from formal studio shots to candid outdoor settings, and they are often used for personal, professional, or artistic purposes, including social media profiles, corporate websites, family albums, and artistic exhibitions. The goal of a portrait is to convey a sense of the subject's character, emotions, and identity through the lens of the photographer's vision and skill.

WHAT TYPES OF PHOTOGRAPHY SERVICES DO YOU OFFER?

My main services for Corporate, healthcare, actors, sportspersons are Headshots, portraiture, which are defined as a mid shot for portraits or for headshot, chest and up. Full body shots are also available for portfolio work and website on request minimum 3 days prior to the shot day.
Other works are Fashion, lifestyle and product Photography, including Film work for social media and youtube advertising. Contact me for inquiries of interest.

WHAT SETS YOUR HEADSHOTS & PORTRAITS APART FROM OTHERS?

Read my reviews. I care deeply about YOUR Perception. How you look in a second is incredibly important, there is so much psychology, mood, lighting and acuity that goes into a headshot. I personally have studied micro expressions, social psychology and how lighting affects the mood of a photo, as to how a person is perceived the second your photo is viewed. This is why I came up with PortraitScore. An anonymous peer voting tool that lets people vote on your image based on key factors of perception, all across the globe giving you data on what is your best photo.
This is science based Psychological data on your photo! Now imagine how much more work you will gain because your portrait is that attractive, compared to your selfie, or that photographer down the road who has no care and no idea? You can see it in their work. “That’ll do” is something I have heard a lot from Photographers. You won't hear that from me. Get your Headshot and Portraits taken with me & get them tested on PortraitScore! You will see the difference! For more on PortraitScore & Max Valour click here

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR FOR MY HEADSHOT OR PORTRAIT PHOTOSHOOT? Corporate and Health Professionals:

I recommend avoiding strong patterns or logos as these tend to distract the eye and date over time. A shirt with a jacket is best for a full corporate look, or without a jacket for a more casual look for women. For men a suit jacket is the preferred option. Black or blue suits work well with white, grey or timber settings. Grey or blue suits and lighter colours work best with our environmental styles (see Galleries). Women’s tops may be without a collar however sleeves are recommended in most cases. Dresses without sleeves can work well but consider the focus of the shot is on the upper portion of your body unless you require a 3/4 of full body shots.
Actors:
We recommend avoiding strong patterns or logos as these tend to distract the eye and date over time. A plainer shirt or top is best for an actor's look as we normally only see your top half for headshots. For men, black, grey or earth colours work best. Women’s tops work well in most colours. Although it's alway good to remember that lighter and brighter colours draw the eye away from your face. So medium to darker colours are best to get noticed in your shots. For dancers and performers we suggest bringing along a few changes of clothes and costumes especially if we are shooting dance or more full length images showing off your movement/technique and body.
Sports Persons:
I recommend bringing your game day uniform so the association is easily made to who you are and what you represent. In addition to this, some props work really well to assist this connection. Often we will do a shoot in the studio but also on location where you train. Using atmosphere smoke and coloured lights can really help capture your hero shot in action.
In addition to this, your headshot and portrait will require some casual clothing. I recommend avoiding strong patterns or logos as these tend to distract the eye and date over time. Texture can be a good way around this as long as it is a bold plain colour, like solid greens, blues and grey. Black and white help too. Please avoid pastel or baby colours unless your skin tone contrasts these colours well.

DO YOU PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL HAIR & MAKEUP SERVICES?

Yes we have the understudy of Queensland’s Top Hair and Make Up Artist working regularly with us to ensure you look your very best in front of the camera. This is also a great way to combine your shoot and look fabulous for lunch or dinner afterwards! To find out more about hairstyles & makeup for your headshot session, please click here. To book hair & makeup or for information on pricing please contact Max Valour.

I’M DOING MY OWN HAIR & MAKE UP, WHAT SHOULD I WEAR ?

We recommend the services of a professional makeup artist to create a really great headshot.
If you are confident in your own makeup application below are some tips to get the best result.

  • Your makeup is best kept simple and fresh, apply as you would for a light evening application.
  • Use a lipstick or gloss which is quite close to your natural lip colour
  • A matte look is preferable so try to avoid using a mineral based foundation as these can be too reflective using flash photography.
  • Be sure to finish with a translucent or pressed powder over your liquid foundation to avoid shine.
  • You may like to bring touch-up makeup as well (compact powder and lip gloss)
  • If your hair is going to be out, please ensure that it is smooth and neat for the day - consider how  your hair will look from all angles.

HOW LONG DOES A PHOTOSHOOT GO FOR?

Typically a headshot photoshoot lasts 75 mins with 3 changes of clothes, and I like to spend about 30 mins with you picking out your best photos. This step saves up to 5 days in the turn around process for receiving your images. Even more if you have decided to opt in for the PortraitScore peer voting. I highly recommend putting aside a minimum of 2.5 hours for your photoshoot, including choosing photos to allow breathing room to get to your next appointment.

WHAT POSES DO I NEED TO KNOW?

I will coach you through how to pose on the day, to ensure you get the best image that translates on the day. However the most difficult thing to do is a technique called ‘squinching’. Its a when you close your lower eye lid one third to help you look more confident and competent. To find out more so you can practise at home, here is my friend Eli Samuel explaining the same technique used for his online dating in Austin.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE PHOTO SESSION?

If you spend time with me to help select your images, I will be able to jump immediately into editing them and return them to you within 48 hours typically. Each photo takes me about 45 mins to edit each including retouching, and background adjustments.
Otherwise I will minimise the photos down to your best photos of the day and send you a link for viewing watermarked very low quality unedited images to choose your images according to your chosen package. After which it takes me about 45 mins to edit each image, which often works out to many hours afterwards perfecting your final look.

CAN I REQUEST SPECIFIC RETOUCHING OR EDITING TO MY PHOTOS?

Yes absolutely! Retouching and specific editing can definitely be added to the service given the time to do so. Light image enhancements are automatically provided with your files. A range of professional retouching services are also available as an optional. These include evening up your eyes, removing lines or blemishes, fixing teeth. Through to double chins, jaw contouring, general body contouring and beyond. All our work looks natural and can be carried out to your specifications. For pricing details please contact the studio. For actors it is recommended to have a natural look as much as possible so scouts and agents know what they are getting on screen.

WHY DO PHOTOS NEED EDITING?

Photos often require editing to realise their full potential. One crucial aspect is ensuring that the colours captured accurately represent real-life colours. Sometimes, the colours captured by the camera may not precisely match those in reality, leading to discrepancies. Editing allows for adjustments in exposure, colour balance, and contrast, ensuring that images accurately portray the scene and are visually appealing. Additionally, editing tools enable the removal of imperfections and distractions, refining composition and creating a polished final product. Furthermore, editing offers the opportunity to add creative effects or enhancements, elevating the aesthetic appeal and aligning with the desired style or mood. Beyond aesthetics, editing ensures that photos are optimised for various platforms, whether it's for websites, social media, or print materials. Ultimately, editing transforms raw digital photographs into captivating and professional images that meet clients' expectations and effectively serve their intended purposes.

HOW LONG DOES EDITING TAKE?

Each image can take between 20 mins and 1 hour depending on how complex it is. Very complex images like focus stacking can take many hours to perfect per image. Generally speaking I find each headshot image takes about 40 mins to edit. Times that by 12 images and that is a full 8 hours of editing on one photoshoot! This further helps explain why photographers charge so much, for what appears to be just a simple click of a button at the time. A lot of additional time goes in beyond what the client sees.

WHAT IMAGE FORMATS CAN I HAVE?

I provide Jpeg images in 3 different sizes and colour profiles.
1. Full resolution in Adobe RGB1998 for perfect for Printing
2. Screen resolution in sRGB perfect for websites and fast loading speeds
3. Social Media resolution a small compact resolution favourable to instagram and TikTok preferences.
Please let me know if you have any special requests like for a billboard! Contact Max Valour Photographer in Brisbane

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE EDITING & HOW DO GET MY IMAGES?

After editing is complete, and payment is settled I will email you a link to your gallery of images available in full resolution, screen resolution & social resolution. You can download them from there, and so can anyone with the link. However the link will expire after 1 month without warning.

WHAT IS GOOGLE DRIVE?

Google Drive is where we currently use to store images in a cloud based file service, allowing you to access preselection and download your final images. This is subject to change in future.

DO YOU USE MY IMAGES FOR MARKETING?

I will always ask your permission for use of images. It is only ethical to do so, and often I will give you a benefit for doing so. Should you belong to an agency a talent release form will be required. All images taken are date stamped to prove any discrepancies. Use of any photography services in Australia is for purchase of the licence to use the images, however ownership of the images are the photographers unless ownership is sold by agreement.
